Uhm... you´re almost the same as me... *thinking*.
Well, I dunno that brand of colours but as you explained, maybe they´re too hard in many types of papers. The thing I do is the next one: I also do my drawings exaggeratedly small; for that reason I start doing them with H pencil, then I ink them with fountain pen (or any other ink, whatever you want) and then I scan them. I use to keep the original ones and I use the copies to practice. The thing is, don´t be affraid of doing bigger images... but if you feel insecure you can start in the middle of the A4 sheet, why not??
By the way, I use Prismacolor and Bond paper for coloring. Maybe Prismacolors are expensive but they´re so smooth in all papers... they worth it!!
